Cameron, Earl (1915-2005)

Earl Cameron, born in June 1915, held several jobs prior to distinguishing himself as a national newscaster. His career started at CHAB Radio in his home town of Moose Jaw, where he went on to become the station's chief announcer and commercial manager. In 1943, he worked for the Manitoba government station in Winnipeg, which was an important production centre for the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC). Cameron joined the CBC staff a year later and was transferred to Toronto, where he won the coveted assignment of reading the evening national news. Canadians quickly recognized Cameron for his steady and genuine delivery of the news. In 1959, he left radio to anchor the CBC television news at 11:00 p.m. Seven years later, he switched to the supper-hour TV report while also reading the 10:00 p.m. national news to radio audiences in the Maritimes, Quebec, and Ontario. Later in his career, Cameron hosted the Viewpoint series and provided the voice-over for the famous “Look Ma, no cavities” Crest toothpaste commercials. Having retired in 1976, Earl Cameron died in Barrie, Ontario, on January 13, 2005.
